On Whimsical Art

Lynette Sykora has been studying art for over 10 years. Starting with a fascination in color and texture as a child, these curiosities developed all through compulsory school, culminating in her completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts, concentration in painting and drawing from Texas women university in 2018.

During Lynettes time in University it was discovered that she is a synesthete, someone who’s senses mingle and can give multiple inputs when stimulated by a single source. She later turned this anomaly into the foundation for her Bachelors show “Serendipity”. See the Synesthesia & Serendipities page for more on this project.

With two parents who got musical degrees, it was not much of a surprise that all four children followed in their parents musical footsteps. Lynette plays the Bass, primarily in classical, orchestral, settings. She has been studying it for over 10 years, and spends every week teaching private lessons to junior and high school students.

Her love of music is integral to her art, as it is commonly music that stimulate her inspiration, drive or completion of a project. Often in the early stages of a piece, a particular song will strike a resonance with the art, and she will listen to it on loop through the entirety of her process. Many works are titled after pieces of music, and this is to give homage to the inspiration, and help the viewer catch a glimpse of what drives her creative process. Playing and studying music herself only ands another layer of understanding and fascination to the pure abstraction that is music.

Lynette is based out of Dallas Texas, and is a full-time illustrator for Harmonic software production studios. She creates communicative illustrations, infographics, and concept works to help demonstrate the complex software world to the lay person. She is also the creator of Harmonic’s Chibis, the fun artistic avatars for the employees of Harmonic. For more on Harmonic and the kind of stories she is helping tell, go to the Harmonic page.

Some fun facts: Lynette did not start any formal drawing or training till junior high, were she was enrolled in the art magnet. Lynette is Dyslexic and struggled learning to read. In desperation her mother introduced her to the world of fantasy, where an interest in dragons sparked both her reading and drawing careers. It was hours and hours of copying, designing and creating her own dragons that began her path to advanced draft work and later painting. Watercolor mixed with markers or graphite is her favorite medium to work in, with oil painting as a close second and ink work third. She has three younger brothers, all of whom get exponentially taller than her. They are often a source both of great annoyance and incredible excitement. Commonly these instigations by one of the siblings will be a cause for art to come into existence for one reason or another.
